Restaurants and cafés rank on Google Maps on three factors Google names: relevance, distance and prominence. There is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you control is a complete and accurate profile, the right category, genuine reviews and helpful replies. Distance you do not control. This guide applies the three factors to a restaurant or café branch.

When someone searches for "specialty coffee near me" or "mandi restaurant in Al Yasmin", Google shows local results on Google Maps and Search. In its page on tips to improve local ranking, it says local results are mainly based on these three factors. This article is about restaurants and cafés; for the general steps for any business read the [guide to improving your Google Maps ranking legitimately](https://smtak.com/en/blog/how-to-improve-google-maps-ranking-legally.md).

## Relevance: does your profile match the search?

Google defines relevance as how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for, and advises complete and detailed information. For a restaurant or café that means:

1. The primary category: Google says your chosen categories affect your local ranking, and advises picking the most specific one from the list, such as "pizza restaurant" rather than just "restaurant". Pick the closest to your business from the available list, and as few additional categories as possible.
2. Menu, booking and ordering links: Google says restaurants can add links to menus, reservations and online ordering, and add menu items directly.
3. Attributes: outdoor seating, parking and Wi-Fi are attributes Google mentions, and your business may show in searches for places that have them.
4. Hours: update Ramadan and Eid hours before they start. A branch that is closed when the customer arrives is a recurring reason for a negative review.
5. Photos: Google recommends at least three of each type, including food and drink, interior and exterior, and real, well-lit pictures.

The full checklist is in the [Google Business Profile audit](https://smtak.com/en/blog/google-business-profile-completeness-audit.md).

## Distance: what you do and do not control

Google says distance is how far each business is from the customer searching, and that it uses what it knows about their location if they do not share it. A customer standing in Khobar will not see your Jeddah branch however well you set up your profile. What you can do:

- Make sure each branch's pin and address on the map are correct.
- Give each branch its own profile, since multi-location businesses are managed with one profile per location.
- Do not add a neighbourhood or search terms to the business name. Google says location information in the name is not permitted and can lead to suspension.

## Prominence: reviews, links and replies

Google defines prominence as how well-known a business is, and says it also draws on information such as how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It lists replying to reviews among its tips, and says positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out. It gives no weight for that effect.

What this means for a restaurant or café:

- Ask every guest the same way, with a link or a QR code printed on the table or receipt. Create the link in the [Google review link and QR tool](https://smtak.com/en/tools/google-review-link.md).
- Do not tie the review to a discount or a free coffee. That is an incentive Google's policies prohibit.
- Neither the cashier nor the waiter should ask a guest to write a review, or for "five stars", while standing at the table. The policy prohibits requiring or pressuring a review while the customer is on the premises, and asking for specific content.
- Reply to what the reviewer said: the dish, the wait, the service. Samples in a Saudi dialect are in [replying to Google Maps reviews](https://smtak.com/en/blog/replying-to-google-maps-comments-saudi-dialect.md).

## What Google does not say

Some say reply speed has a weight in ranking, or that writing keywords inside replies raises your visibility. Google has said neither, so do not build a plan on them. Write the reply for a person deciding whether to visit.

## A one-month plan for a restaurant or café branch

1. Week one: check the name, category, hours, phone and menu link, and add recent photos of dishes.
2. Week two: put a QR code somewhere visible on the table or receipt, with fixed wording that invites everyone.
3. Week three: reply to every accumulated review, negative ones first.
4. Week four: sort complaints: waiting, cold food, cleanliness, parking. Whatever recurs is fixed at the branch, not with a reply.

## Common mistakes

- Stuffing the name with the neighbourhood or "best".
- Leaving Ramadan hours unchanged.
- Buying reviews that promise first place. Google prohibits reviews given for incentives, and says they are removed.
- Answering only the positive reviews and leaving the negative ones.

SMTAK brings every branch's reviews into one dashboard with a draft reply for each, and a per-branch report of average rating, reply rate and recurring topics, so you see where a branch needs work.

## Frequently asked questions

### How are restaurants ranked on Google Maps?

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. There is no way to request or pay for a better ranking.

### Does the number of reviews affect my restaurant's ranking?

Google says prominence also draws on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It promises no particular result and publishes no weight.

### Does replying quickly raise a café's ranking?

Google gives no weight for reply speed. It lists replying to reviews among its tips and says it shows you value customers, so reply for the customer, not for a number.

### Should I put the neighbourhood in my restaurant's name?

No. Google says location information in the name is not permitted and can lead to suspension. Use the name on your sign.

### Should I ask guests for a review when they pay?

Display a QR code on the table or receipt with an open invitation, but do not ask them to write one or press them while they are on the premises, and do not ask for stars or specific content. That is what Google's policy says.
