There is no universal figure for what a better Google Maps rating is worth, and anyone handing you a ready percentage is guessing. What can be said: Google says the number of reviews and positive ratings may improve local ranking, and a published study of another platform tied extra stars to independent restaurants' revenue. What it is worth to your business you work out with your own numbers, in decision steps, not a promised return.

A Google Maps rating affects the decision to visit, and the practical question is whether it is worth the effort and money. This guide sets out the questions in order; it promises no return.

## What Google says

On its page "Tips to improve your local ranking on Google", Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, that prominence is also based on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says replying to reviews shows customers you value their feedback. It gives no weight or percentage, and says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. The factors in detail are in [how to improve your Google Maps ranking legitimately](https://smtak.com/en/blog/how-to-improve-google-maps-ranking-legally.md).

## What the well-known study says, and its limits

Harvard Magazine published in October 2011 a summary of a study by Michael Luca of Harvard Business School, reporting from it that a one-star increase in a Yelp rating leads to a 5-9 percent increase in revenue. Do not transfer that result to your business as it stands, because:

- The platform is Yelp, not Google.
- The study covers Seattle restaurants in the United States, more than a decade ago.
- According to the summary, the effect comes from independent restaurants, and does not appear for chain restaurants.
- It is an association in specific restaurants' data, not a promise of a result for your business.

Its use is to show that a rating is not a cosmetic number; it is not a rule for calculating your return.

## Decision steps with your own numbers

### 1. Know where you are now

Open your profile and record the average rating, the number of reviews, the dates of the last ten reviews, and how many low reviews were left unanswered. This is the starting point, and without it you will not know whether anything changed.

### 2. Set a target with honest arithmetic

Each new review changes the average depending on how many came before, so the more reviews you have, the more it takes to move the average. Try your numbers here:

Try the calculator right here on the site: [Google rating calculator](https://smtak.com/en/tools/google-rating-calculator.md).

An arithmetic example for illustration only, not a business result: someone with 120 reviews averaging 4.2 needs 72 five-star reviews to reach 4.5. The method is in [how a Google Maps rating is calculated and how many reviews you need](https://smtak.com/en/blog/google-maps-rating-calculator-how-many-reviews.md), and the standalone tool is the [Google Maps rating calculator](https://smtak.com/en/tools/google-rating-calculator.md).

### 3. Ask: how many extra visits cover the cost?

Instead of guessing a revenue rise, flip the question:

- A = what you pay monthly for review and reply tools (or the value of the time of whoever replies).
- B = the average margin you earn from one visit.
- Extra visits needed to cover the cost = A ÷ B.

Do you expect a better rating and better replies to bring that many visits a month? That judgement is yours, on your numbers. SMTAK's published prices are 69, 119 and 169 riyals a month for the first branch depending on the plan, with a 14-day free trial and no card.

### 4. Count what is being lost now

- How many low reviews have gone unanswered? Google says replying to reviews shows you value customers' feedback.
- How often has a complaint about waiting or cleanliness recurred? These lower the average, and operations fix them, not replies.

### 5. Choose what raises the rating without risk

1. Ask every customer in the same way with a link or QR code from the [Google review link and QR tool](https://smtak.com/en/tools/google-review-link.md).
2. Reply to every review with text written for its author.
3. Fix the causes of recurring complaints.
4. Do not buy reviews: Google's policy prohibits paid reviews, and says a profile that breaks the fake engagement policy may face restrictions. The detail is in [buying Google Maps reviews](https://smtak.com/en/blog/buying-google-maps-reviews-what-really-happens.md).

### 6. Measure after 90 days

Compare with the starting point: the average, the number of new reviews and the reply rate. Google also provides performance insights in your profile showing how visitors interact with it, so watch them. Do not attribute every change to the rating alone, since seasons, offers and competitors also affect results.

## Common mistakes in working out the return

- Transferring a foreign study's percentage to your business.
- Assuming every extra star means an immediate rise in visits.
- Counting the tool's cost without the time of whoever approves replies.
- Overlooking that cosmetic fixes, like buying, can cost you more than they earn.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much will a better rating raise my revenue?

There is no universal figure. A published study of Yelp and independent Seattle restaurants points to 5 to 9 percent per star, but it concerns neither Google nor your business. Work out your return with your own numbers and the decision steps above.

### Does the number of reviews raise my Google Maps ranking?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help improve local ranking, without stating a weight or promising a result.

### How many reviews do I need to reach 4.5?

It depends on your current average and review count. Enter them in the free Google Maps rating calculator to see how many five-star reviews are needed.

### Is a reply tool worth its cost?

Compare its monthly cost with the margin on one visit to see how many extra visits it must cover, and with the value of the time of whoever replies now. Try the 14-day free trial before deciding.
