How many reviews do you need to raise your Google Maps rating? It depends on your current rating, your review count and your target. Example: 120 reviews averaging 4.2 need 72 five-star reviews to reach 4.5. Enter your numbers below for your own count. The maths runs in your browser without sign-up, and comes with review request messages that follow Google’s policies: for every customer, with no incentive and no star count asked for.

Today 4.2

Target 4.5

You need about

72 reviews

averaging 5.0 for your rating to show 4.5, with 192 reviews in total.

| Target | New reviews |
| --- | --- |
| 4.3 | 18 reviews |
| 4.5 | 72 reviews |
| 4.7 | 200 reviews |
| 4.8 | 360 reviews |
| 4.9 | 840 reviews |

For contrast: one one-star review today takes your rating to 4.2. That is why every low rating deserves a quick reply and a fix before it repeats.

## How the result is worked out

The shown rating is the stars of every review added together and divided by their number, rounded to one decimal. If you add new reviews at a given average, the number that lifts the average to the target is:

reviews needed = your review count × (target − current) ÷ (new average − target)

Example: 120 reviews averaging 4.2, a target of 4.5 and five-star new reviews: 120 × 0.3 ÷ 0.5 = 72 reviews.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many reviews do I need to raise my Google Maps rating?

It depends on three numbers: your current rating, your review count and your target. Example: a business with 120 reviews averaging 4.2 needs 72 five-star reviews to reach 4.5. Enter your numbers in the calculator above to get the exact count. This is arithmetic on the average, not a promise of what Google will show.

### How does the calculator work out the number?

It treats the rating you see as the plain average of all your reviews, then finds the smallest number of new reviews, at the average you expect for them, that brings the average up to the target. The formula: reviews needed = your review count × (target − current rating) ÷ (average of new reviews − target), rounded up.

### Why might the figure Google shows differ slightly?

The displayed rating is rounded to one decimal, so the true average can sit a fraction above or below it, and Google may leave out reviews it removed or withheld. Treat the result as a close estimate rather than an exact figure.

### Why does a business with many reviews need more of them?

Because each new review's effect is spread over every review you already have. A business with 40 reviews averaging 4.0 needs 40 five-star reviews to reach 4.5; one with 800 reviews at the same average needs 800. Reputation is built by asking every customer, continuously, not by one campaign.

### Should I ask customers for five stars?

No. Google's policies prohibit asking for a particular star rating, offering anything in return, or sending only happy customers to Google. What is allowed is reminding every customer the same way through a link or a QR code, which is what the messages on this page do.

### How do I actually get that many reviews?

Ask every customer after the service through the direct link or the QR code, reply to every review you receive, and fix complaints before they repeat. Make your link and QR code with the free review link tool, and reply with the template library or the reply generator.

### What if the new reviews' average does not exceed the target?

Then no number of reviews reaches the target, because each new review pulls the average towards its own value. Raise the expected average of new reviews or choose a lower target. An exact 5.0 is out of reach while a single review is under five stars, even though Google shows the average rounded to one decimal.

### Do you store my numbers?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to SMTAK's servers.
