Removing a Business From Google Maps: Close It, Remove It From Your Account, or Request Deletion
There is no single button that deletes your business from Google Maps at once, and the route depends on your case: mark it permanently closed if the business closed, remove the profile from your account to stop managing it, or ask Google to remove it from Search and Maps if it is a duplicate or ineligible.
"I want my business off Google Maps" comes from different situations: a business that really closed, one that moved, a listing created by mistake or duplicated, or a listing for a business you do not own. Each has its own route, and Google has no "delete" button that wipes a listing off the map at once. The steps below come from Google's help pages as they stood on 8 October 2026.
Route one: the "Permanently closed" label (the business really closed)
- Go to business.google.com and choose "Edit profile", then "Hours".
- Next to Hours choose "Edit", then "Permanently closed" for good, or "Temporarily closed" if the closure is longer than 7 days, seasonal or open-ended.
- Click "Save".
- For several branches: in the Business Profile manager select them, then "Actions", then "Mark as permanently closed" or "Mark as temporarily closed", and confirm.
The result: the listing stays visible on Search and Maps to anyone who looks for it, labelled permanently closed, so no customer wastes a trip. For a closure of 7 days or less use special hours instead of the temporary label. If the label was set by mistake, or you reopen, use the "Reopen location" link.
Route two: remove the profile from your account
This ends your management of the listing and does not promise to hide it from the map:
- In business.google.com choose the More icon, then "Business Profile settings".
- Choose "Remove Business Profile", then "Remove profile content and managers". If the business is closed, switch on "Mark your business as permanently closed".
- Choose "Continue", then "Remove", then "Done".
- Who can: primary owners only; a newly added owner or manager waits 7 days.
- Deleted for good, with no recovery: your posts, photos, videos and replies to reviews.
- What stays: customers' reviews and everything users created.
- Does the listing leave the map? Not necessarily; it may keep showing on Search and Maps unless it is ineligible. With the closed label it fades from search results gradually and is then removed.
Route three: ask Google to remove the listing from Search and Maps
For a listing of a business that does not exist at all or is not eligible to appear: a duplicate, a wrong location, or a listing someone else created. Anyone can file the request, even without owning the profile:
- Sign in to a Google account; the request cannot be filed without one.
- Open Google Maps in the browser or the app and select the business.
- Click "Suggest an edit", then "Place is closed or not here".
- Pick the reason, such as "Not located here" or "Offensive, harmful or misleading", then "Submit".
You may receive an email with the status and follow-up questions; if Google approves, the business is removed from Google Search and Maps. Google states no review time and approval is not certain. To correct a wrong name, phone or website do not use this route; use the business information correction complaint form.
Which route fits your case?
- You closed for good: route one, then route two if you want to stop managing the listing.
- You moved to a new address: do not mark it closed and do not remove it; edit the address in the same profile so your reviews stay with you.
- A duplicate or wrongly placed listing: route three, after you claim and verify the correct one.
- A listing in your business's name created by someone else: claim it first rather than deleting it; the reviews on it are an asset of yours.
What happens to the reviews?
Reviews belong to the people who wrote them. Removing the profile from your account deletes your replies, not their reviews, and the closed label keeps them visible under it. A single review is removed only when it breaks Google's policies; how to report one is in the guide to removing a Google Maps review.
Where SMTAK helps
SMTAK does not delete listings or reviews; that is Google's decision alone. What it does: it notices a review that was removed from Google Maps and hides it from your dashboard on the next sync, and it keeps following the reviews of your open branches and drafts a reply to each for you to approve before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
Does my business disappear from Google Maps as soon as I mark it permanently closed?
No. The listing stays visible to anyone who looks for it, with the label, and Google says it then fades from search results gradually. Removal from Search and Maps is a separate request through "Suggest an edit".
Are customer reviews deleted when I remove the profile from my account?
No. Customers' reviews and content stay; what is deleted for good is what owners and managers published: posts, photos, videos and replies to reviews.
Someone created a duplicate listing of my business. How do I remove it?
Claim and verify the correct listing first, then open the duplicate in Google Maps, choose "Suggest an edit", then "Place is closed or not here", and pick the reason. Google reviews the request and emails you the outcome.
Can SMTAK or any company delete a listing or a review from Google Maps?
No. Removal is Google's decision alone after a request or a report it reviews. What SMTAK does is notice a review Google removed and hide it from your dashboard, and keep following and answering your branches' reviews.
How do I close my Business Profile on Google Maps?
If the business really closed, choose Edit profile, then Hours, then Permanently closed, and save. The listing stays visible with the label. For a temporary closure choose Temporarily closed.
How do I delete my Business Profile?
In Business Profile settings choose Remove Business Profile, then Remove profile content and managers. This ends your management of the listing, does not guarantee it leaves the map and does not delete customers' reviews. Only the primary owner can do it.
