Google Business Profile Audit: The Fields Owners Leave Empty
To audit your Google Maps profile, check eight items in order: name, category, address, hours, phone and website, attributes, photos and verification. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. Each item below says what Google accepts and rejects, as stated on its own pages.
A complete profile does not promise a ranking: Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. But it shortens the customer's decision to call or visit. For the wider picture of ranking factors read how to improve your Google Maps ranking legitimately, and if you have not created your profile yet, start with what a Google Business Profile is.
1. The name: as on your sign
Google asks for your real-world business name, as customers know it and as it appears on your storefront, website and stationery. It says including unnecessary information is not permitted and can lead to suspension. The kinds of content the page says a name must not include (the quoted examples are ours):
- Promotional phrases, such as "best in town".
- Hours information, such as "open 24 hours" or "closed".
- Phone numbers or website addresses.
- Service or product information, and location information such as a neighbourhood or street.
- Words in all capitals, special symbols, and TM or registered-mark signs.
- The same name repeated in two languages or scripts.
So a name like "Al Nakheel Restaurant - Olaya - Best" is written "Al Nakheel Restaurant" only. For chains, Google says all locations should have the same name unless the business is really represented differently from one location to another.
2. The category: fewest, most precise
Google says the categories you choose affect your local ranking, so pick a primary category that describes the business precisely. Its example: "nail salon" is better than "salon". For extra categories, Google says: use as few as possible to describe the core business, do not use them as keywords, and do not choose a category for each product or service. It also warns you may be asked to verify again after editing a category.
A practical point: some categories unlock features. Google says restaurants can add links to menus, reservations and online ordering, and health and beauty businesses can add a booking button and edit their service list.
3. The address
A precise address or service area is one of the first things Google asks for. For businesses that go to customers, such as mobile repair, a service area is set instead of a location. Avoid addresses customers do not actually visit: under its guidelines a virtual office is not eligible for a Business Profile.
4. Hours and special hours
Arriving at a closed branch is one of the most common negative-review themes. Google lets you set regular hours and special hours for particular days such as holidays and occasions. So update Ramadan, Eid and National Day hours before they start, not after. Google also notes some businesses should not list hours, including hotels and appointment-only businesses, so do not invent them.
5. Phone and website
Use a local number your team answers, not a central call-centre line where possible. Google requires the number to be under the business's direct control, not one that redirects callers elsewhere, and not one that charges the caller extra. The link should open a page that genuinely belongs to this branch. For a restaurant or clinic, the booking or ordering link is one of the fields the category opens.
6. Attributes
Parking, outdoor seating, Wi-Fi and wheelchair-accessible entrance are attributes Google shows in Search and Maps, and it says your business may show for searches for places with them. Edits are usually reviewed in about 10 minutes, and in some cases can take up to 30 days, according to Google. Some attributes are filled in from visitors' input, so review them now and then.
7. Photos
Google says photos and videos show customers what you offer and tell your story, and it suggests photo types by category: exterior, interior, products, the team at work, and food and drink for restaurants, with at least three of each type. Its file guidance: JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, a preferred 720 by 720 pixels with a 250 by 250 minimum, and clear, well-lit photos that reflect reality without heavy filters. Photos do not show on the profile until the business is verified.
8. Verification
Google says verification tells it you are authorised to represent the business, so it is more likely to show up. It is also required to edit the name and hours and to reply to reviews. Google chooses the verification options automatically and you cannot change them: phone, text message, email or a video call. If you choose phone, make sure your business number can receive calls, since automated phone systems cannot receive the code.
If you get stuck on the verification steps, SMTAK offers a paid Google Maps verification service that helps you through Google's process.
A monthly routine
- Check upcoming hours and occasions.
- Add new photos of the storefront or items.
- Check the phone and the links.
- Review attributes after any change in the shop.
- Read and answer new reviews. The steps and samples are in replying to Google Maps reviews.
Common mistakes
- Stuffing the name with the neighbourhood or "best" hoping to rank.
- Choosing a long list of categories because the list allows it.
- Leaving Ramadan hours unchanged, so the customer reaches a closed door.
- A phone number nobody answers.
- Old photos that no longer look like the place.
SMTAK handles the reviews and replies in this routine; the profile fields themselves are edited directly in your Google profile.
Frequently asked questions
Should I add my neighbourhood or "best" to the business name?
No. Google asks for the name as on your sign, and treats promotional phrases and location information as not permitted, which can lead to suspension.
How many categories should I choose?
Pick one precise primary category, then as few additional ones as possible. Google says not to use them as keywords or to choose one per service.
Does a complete profile affect visibility?
Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, but also says there is no way to request or pay for a better ranking.
How do I change my hours for Ramadan and Eid?
In your Business Profile, add special hours for the days that differ, before they start. Google lets you set special hours for holidays and occasions.
Can I reply to reviews before verifying the profile?
No. Google requires the business to be verified before you can reply to reviews.
