Asking for a Google Maps Review on WhatsApp: Timing, Wording and Ready Templates

SMTAK TeamPublished Updated Reading time: 5 min read

To ask for a Google Maps review on WhatsApp, send a short message after the visit at a time that suits your business, with a thank-you, an open request for the customer's view and one review link, in the same words to every customer you dealt with. No discount, no request for stars, no request for specific content. Google itself says review requests can be sent in a WhatsApp message. This guide has the timing, the wording and ready templates.

A short WhatsApp message after the visit is one of the easiest ways to get new reviews, provided it arrives at the right time and respects the customer and Google's policies. You can create the link you send for free with the Google review link and QR code tool. For the wider picture of legitimate ways to get more reviews, read the guide to raising Google Maps reviews.

What Google says about asking for reviews

  • On its page about creating a link or QR code to request reviews, Google says you can also send review requests by email, WhatsApp message or a Facebook post.
  • To encourage customers it suggests including the link in receipts, thank-you emails and at the end of conversations.
  • It prohibits incentives for reviews, such as free or discounted goods or services, and treats them as fake engagement.
  • It allows merchants to request or encourage content that reflects a real experience, without incentives or attempts to influence the rating or the content of the review.

Who to send it to

A customer who dealt with you and gave you their number for a booking, an order or a service, in the same words for every customer. Do not message numbers from lists whose owners did not give them to you, and stop at once if someone asks you to. WhatsApp also has its own terms for business messages, so check them in the app you use.

Do not choose who gets it by how satisfied they were. Google's policy prohibits discouraging customers from posting negative reviews, or asking for positive ones selectively. So the same message goes to someone who praised the service and someone who complained about it, and the complaint is handled by contacting them directly.

Timing

  • Restaurants and cafés: an hour or two after the visit or pickup.
  • Clinics: the next day, not on the day of the procedure.
  • Car and service centres: after the job is confirmed complete and handed back.
  • Salons: the same evening or the next day.
  • Shops and delivery: the day after the order arrives, so the customer has tried the product.

Avoid sending late at night or at prayer time. That is not a Google rule, but it is respect for the customer.

The wording

A greeting by name, a line of thanks, an open request for feedback and one link that opens the review form directly. Every extra link distracts. A few rules:

  • Ask for "your view", not "a five-star rating".
  • Mention no reward, no prize draw and no discount on the next visit.
  • Do not ask them to mention a dish, a staff member or a price in the review.
  • Keep it under four lines, and sign it with the business or branch name.

Ready templates

Restaurant: Thank you, [name], for visiting [business] today. Your opinion helps us improve; if you would like to share your experience: [review link]
Clinic: We wish you good health, [name]. We value your trust in [clinic] and would be glad to hear about your visit: [review link]
Car centre: Your car has been handed over; thank you for choosing [centre]. Your view of the service matters to us: [review link]
Salon: It was lovely to see you today, [name]. If you would like to share your experience: [review link]
Shop: Thank you for shopping at [shop], [name]. We welcome your view of your experience, and this is the review link: [review link]
In standard Arabic style: Thank you for visiting [business]. We would be glad if you shared your opinion of your experience through this link: [review link]

Only the [review link] changes between branches, since each branch has its own link. And after the customer writes, your reply to their review is covered in replying to Google Maps reviews.

What Google prohibits, and what not to write in the message

  • Anything in return for a review: a discount, a gift or a prize draw.
  • "If you liked the service, rate us", which selects the happy customers.
  • "Will you give us five stars?", since that is an attempt to influence the rating.
  • Pressing the customer while on the premises, or requiring a review.
  • Asking your staff to write the reviews themselves, which is a conflict of interest.

Reminders

One message and at most one reminder a few days later. Pressing annoys customers and can get your number blocked. Do not remind someone who has already written their review.

How to get the link

From your Google profile, open Read reviews, then Get more reviews, then Copy to copy the review link. Google says review QR codes can currently be created only in a computer browser, not on a mobile device. Or create the link and a QR code for free in the tool mentioned above, and place the code in the branch using review collection with QR codes and NFC.

If you want customers to find the review link next to your WhatsApp and location in one place, put it on a links page for your business.

Steps to send

  1. Copy the correct branch's link.
  2. Choose your business's template from above and put the link in it.
  3. Send it at the right time for your business, in the same words to every customer.
  4. Note that you sent it, so you do not repeat the request to one customer.
  5. After a week see what reviews arrived, and reply to them.

Common mistakes

  • Sending the message only to people who seem happy.
  • A link that opens the business's general page, not the review form.
  • Using one branch's link for every branch.
  • A long text with several links and offers.
  • Repeated messages to a customer who did not respond.

What SMTAK does

In SMTAK's review campaigns each branch gets its own link and code with a scan count, and a Share on WhatsApp button opens a ready message with the link for you to send from your business WhatsApp. SMTAK does not send WhatsApp messages by itself, currently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ask customers for a Google Maps review on WhatsApp?

Send a short message after the visit with a thank-you, an open request for their view and the branch's review link, in the same words to every customer who gave you their number. No reward, and no request for stars or specific content.

Does Google allow asking for reviews on WhatsApp?

Yes. On its review-link page Google says review requests can be sent by email, WhatsApp message or a Facebook post, as long as you offer no incentives and do not select the happy ones.

Should I send the review request to every customer?

Yes, to every customer who dealt with you and gave you their number, the same way, without picking the happy ones.

How many times should I remind them?

At most one reminder a few days after the first message, then stop, and do not remind someone who has already written.

Should I give a discount in return for a review?

No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews and treats them as fake engagement, and reviews given for one can be removed.

Does SMTAK send WhatsApp messages to customers?

Not by itself, currently. SMTAK prepares a review link and QR code per branch and counts scans, and its Share on WhatsApp button opens a ready message that you send from your business WhatsApp.
